Kashmir travel guide
Kashmir is best explored with Srinagar as your base. Most itineraries spend a night or two on Dal Lake, then move between the three famous valley towns — Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg — each a scenic two-to-three-hour drive away.
Places to include
- Srinagar — shikara rides on Dal Lake, a night on a traditional houseboat, and the Mughal gardens of Nishat Bagh and Shalimar Bagh.
- Gulmarg — the Gulmarg Gondola, one of the highest cable cars in the world, with snow on Apharwat peak for much of the year.
- Pahalgam — the Lidder river and the Betaab, Aru and Baisaran valleys.
- Sonamarg — pony rides to the Thajiwas glacier and the gateway to the road to Ladakh.
When to go
April to October brings green meadows, blooming gardens and pleasant days — the Tulip Garden in Srinagar opens in late March and peaks in early April. December to February is snow season, ideal for skiing and winter photos in Gulmarg.
Getting there
Fly into Srinagar (SXR), which has direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai and other major cities. All our packages include airport pickup and drop.
Good to know
- Prepaid SIM cards from other states do not work in Jammu & Kashmir — carry a postpaid connection.
- Local union cabs are needed for some sightseeing in Gulmarg and Pahalgam; your itinerary notes where this costs extra.
- Pack warm layers even in summer — evenings in the valleys get cold.
