In the Maldives, your resort is the holiday. Each resort sits on its own island, so choosing the right one — villa type, meal plan and transfer — matters more than anything else.

How to choose

• Villa type — beach villas for direct sand access, overwater villas for the classic lagoon view. Many couples split their stay between the two.
• Meal plan — breakfast only, half board, full board or all-inclusive. Resort dining is priced high, so an inclusive plan often works out better.
• Transfer — speedboat for resorts near Malé, seaplane or domestic flight for remote atolls. Transfer costs vary a lot.

Things to do

Snorkel the house reef, take a sandbank picnic or sunset cruise, spot dolphins, try diving, and book a spa treatment over the water.

When to go

November to April is the dry season, with calm seas and clear water. May to October brings more rain but lower prices and good surf.

Getting there and visas

Fly into Velana International Airport in Malé (MLE), with direct flights from several Indian cities. Indian travellers receive a free 30-day tourist visa on arrival with a confirmed resort booking.
