Kerala travel guide
Kerala packs misty hills, slow backwaters and palm-lined beaches into one easy trip. A classic route moves from the tea hills of Munnar to the spice country of Thekkady, then down to a houseboat night in Alleppey and a final stop in Kochi or on the coast.
Places to include
- Munnar — rolling tea estates, Eravikulam National Park and cool hill-station air.
- Thekkady — spice plantations and boating at Periyar.
- Alleppey (Alappuzha) — an overnight houseboat cruise through the backwaters, meals cooked on board.
- Kochi — Fort Kochi’s Chinese fishing nets, colonial streets and Kathakali performances.
- Kovalam and Varkala — relaxed beach time to end the trip.
When to go
September to March is the most comfortable season. The monsoon (June to August) turns everything a deep green and is a popular time for Ayurveda retreats, with fewer crowds.
Getting there
Fly into Kochi (COK) and out of Thiruvananthapuram (TRV), or the reverse, to avoid backtracking. Kerala is well connected by rail too.
Good to know
- Houseboats are private for couples and families — check whether your package includes all meals on board.
- Hill roads to Munnar are winding; build in a relaxed first day.
